Labor Day weekend: some rip current risk, high tide to affect Volusia beach driving

Local lifeguards expect packed beaches for the last three-day holiday weekend of the summer season – Labor Day!

Volusia and Brevard beaches have been relatively quiet this week.

Jeff Scabarozi, ocean rescue chief in Brevard County, said the surf has been small but could swell with bigger waves, depending on the slow-moving track for Hurricane Katia.

Brevard will have its full summer-time complement of lifeguard towers open this weekend, and every weekend through the end of October.

Volusia County has a few strong rip currents that developed this week, so swimmers should take note and stay near the lifeguard towers, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris.

Luckily, there will be more than 50 lifeguard towers in operation during the Labor Day Weekend.

This week, Volusia County did have a small spate of jellyfish stings, but the jellies have largely dissipated.

For those who drive on Volusia beaches, high tide will occur mid-day, which usually requires the county beach patrol is clear out beach traffic for at least an hour or two.

Marris advises that people should arrive early if they want to park on Volusia beaches. Depending on how narrow the beach gets at high tide will dictate what happens in the afternoon. By late afternoon, Marris said the beaches could reopen to traffic.

Enjoy the holiday!
